In their second clash at the ICC World Cup 2023, they were against a strong South Africa, and they never looked in control throughout the match. On the field, they could not grab chances; their bowling was off track, and the batters have never promised in the tournament so far.

On the new surface of Lucknow, Australian skipper Pat Cummins looked to bowl first, which was actually the right one on the newish pitch. South African batters started really well, as Aussie bowling looked a bit scratchy, and they lost a few chances on the field as well. Quinton de Kock scored a century, and Markram’s half century took South Africa to a winning total.

The Australian batters again looked a bit rusty as Marsh was gone early in the inning. David Warner could not hold his cut shot and went back to the dressing room. Steven Smith looked really good but was trapped by Kagiso Rabada Lbw. Maxwell went cheaply to the dressing room, Marcus Stoinis was unfortunate caught behind the wicket, and Marnus Labuschagne did not get any partners. As a result, Australia lost the match by a huge margin of 134 runs.

There are a few things we need to tidy up- Pat Cummins

In the post-match presentation, Pat Cummins expressed the need to find a way to get victory.  Pat Cummins praised Quinton de Kock for his outstanding ton. Pat Cummins thought that Australia could have chased 310 odd runs and said that the ball was doing a lot of talking.

“If we want to be challenged in this tournament, we need to find ways of performing regardless of batting first or second. Don’t think much needs to be said tonight; everyone’s hurting. We’ll try to take a couple of days off and then make amends to come back stronger in the next one. There are a few things we need to tidy up.”

“I thought de Kock batted really well but couldn’t get a breakthrough. From where they were, we were quite happy with 310; we thought it was chaseable. It looked like hard work out there tonight; their bowlers bowled well; I think it nipped around a bit more under lights.”
