Former fielding coach of the Indian cricket team R Sridhar labels Shubman Gill as the rightful successor of Rohit Sharma in all formats. Shubman Gill is India’s vice-captain in the ODI series against Sri Lanka. The talented opener was also the vice-captain of the T20 squad against Sri Lanka, which ended with India winning by 3-0.
Shubman Gill recently had a triumphing stint at India vs Zimbabwe, India tour of Zimbabwe. Shubman Gill and company seized the T20I series by 4-1. India fell short in their first game against Zimbabwe by 13 runs. However, the Men-In-Blue came all guns blazing in the second match, winning it by 100 runs. Similarly, in the third game, fourth, and fifth T20I, India proved their stance of being the number one T20I team. Skipper Shubman Gill registered 170 runs in the series against Zimbabwe, the top run scorer from the Indian squad.
Shubman Gill As India Team Captain After 2027 World Cup: R Sridhar
R Sridhar, in his recent interview, put forward his views on Shubman Gill being considered as the captain of the Indian cricket team after Rohit Sharma. The former fielding coach believes that Shubman Gill is an ideal successor to Rohit Sharma, attaining the captaincy across all formats. In addition, R Sridhar also sees Shubman Gill leading from the front after the 2027 World Cup. R Sridhar also heaped praises on youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal. The 54-year-old ex-fielding coach believes Yashasvi Jaiswal was phenomenal in the Test against England and ODI matches. R Sridhar told Hindustan Times that,
“On current form and going back to the potential they showed in the India-England Test series and even in the ODI games, I think these two are nailing their position in two formats, that is T20Is and Tests. Shubman Gill for me is an all-format player and I think he would be the apprentice to captain Rohit Sharma in Test matches and ODIs. I am sure India will see him as the captain post 2027 World Cup in all formats”
Before the India vs Zimbabwe T20I series, Shubman Gill also had an experience in the captaincy in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. The 24-year-old talented opener led the Gujarat Titans after the departure of Hardik Pandya from the franchise. Gujarat Titans finished eighth on the points table.
The team couldn’t get through to the playoffs, being a finalist in the previous season. However, Shubman Gill had a great show with the bat. Last season orange cap holder registered a total of 426 runs in the IPL 2025 edition. In addition, Shubman also recorded a century to his name in the season scoring 104 against the Chennai Super Kings.
In the recent T20I series against Sri Lanka, Shubman Gill registered 73 runs. The 24-year-old recorded 73 runs with an average of 36.50 and a strike rate of 137.73. Shubman’s best in the series was in the second T20I against Sri Lanka. Gill scored 34 runs off 16 deliveries, which includes six fours and a maximum.
